A Food Lover's Perfect Weekend in Tokyo

Tokyo is a culinary paradise, and a weekend here is a feast for the senses. Start your Saturday morning at the Tsukiji Outer Market (the inner market has moved, but the outer market is still a vibrant hub). Grab a breakfast of fresh sushi or a delicious tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) on a stick.

For lunch, dive into the world of ramen. Find a small, local “ramen-ya” – often with a vending machine for ordering – and slurp down a rich, flavorful bowl of tonkotsu or shoyu ramen. In the afternoon, explore a “depachika,” the sprawling food halls in the basements of department stores like Isetan or Mitsukoshi. The variety and quality of the food on display is simply staggering.

On Sunday, experience a traditional Japanese breakfast at a ryokan or a specialized restaurant. It’s a beautiful, multi-course affair. For your final meal, why not try something different like monjayaki on Tsukishima Monja Street, or explore the tiny, atmospheric bars and eateries of Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) in Shinjuku.
