How to Confidently Navigate the Souks of Marrakech

The souks of Marrakech are a dizzying, intoxicating maze of sights, sounds, and smells. The first rule is to embrace getting a little lost; it’s part of the experience! But having a few tricks up your sleeve can make the experience more enjoyable. Before you go, have a general idea of what you’re looking for, whether it’s leather goods, spices, lanterns, or argan oil. The souks are roughly divided into areas based on the craft.

When you find something you like, the bargaining process begins. It’s a friendly and expected part of the culture. The first price you’re quoted is just a starting point. A good rule of thumb is to counter with about half the asking price and work your way to a middle ground you’re both happy with. Always be polite, smile, and be prepared to walk away – sometimes that’s when you’ll get the best offer.

Don’t be afraid to ask for directions, but be aware that some unofficial “guides” may expect a tip for leading you. A better bet is to ask a shopkeeper. To find your way back, remember landmarks like the main square, Djemaa el-Fna, and use an offline map app on your phone. Most importantly, take your time, sip some mint tea, and soak in the incredible atmosphere.
