The best way to see New Zealand’s South Island is by road. Start in Christchurch and head south to see the stunningly blue Lake Tekapo. Continue to Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world, where you can bungee jump, jet boat, or hike. A must-do is a day trip or overnight cruise in Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, with their towering fjords and waterfalls. The drive along the West Coast, with its glaciers (Fox and Franz Josef) and wild beaches, is one of the most scenic routes on the planet. Allow at least two weeks to do it justice.
